2012 Summer Olympics: Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross round out the women's gymnastics squad
The other three spots were up for grabs at the trials. They went to Aly Raisman (left), who finished third at trials, Kyla Ross (middle), who finished fifth, and McKayla Maroney (right), who finished sixth. Elizabeth Price, who kind of came out of nowhere at the trials to finish fourth, was left off the team in favor of Maroney (going by the standings at trials), largely because Maroney's vaulting skill could increase the U.S. overall team score by 0.8, which is a huge amount at this level.
Price was named as an alternate and will travel to London and be ready to compete should anything happen to any of the five squad members. Also named as alternates are Sarah Finnegan and Anna Li.
