2013 World Series: Tim McCarver knows baseball and fine French chardonnay
Tim McCarver: Yes (laughs).
Zap2it : What are your preferred varietals?
Tim McCarver : I like cabs (cabernet). I like chardonnays also. I like the big chardonnays of France. You know, it's such a blending world now, almost like the people who drink it. There are blends of grapes and people. And I bought a place out in Napa (Valley in California) and everything. Continuing to work out to keep the weight off is going to be a little bit different.
Zap2it : Are you doing what Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver did and buying a vineyard in Napa?
Tim McCarver : No, I'm not. In fact, it's interesting you ask that. I went to see Tom and Nancy at their home about three weeks ago, and we had the nicest visit all day. And I looked at his grapes and his vineyard. He's got about 3 1/2 acres, he makes about 500 cases a year, and it's very, very good wine.
It's GTS -- George Thomas Seaver -- and it was very expensive when it started out. I'm not sure if they've maintained that $100 a bottle price, but it's a very, very good wine. ... I paid $100 a bottle. I didn't get a break, and I bought a case in '05, and it is sensational right now. I'm not speaking for Tom, but he has that Lyme disease, and it's really bothering him, and it's a real, real problem. And he's a terrific guy.
