james-garner-the-notebook.jpgHollywood legend James Garner -- star of "The Notebook" and "The Rockford Files" -- has died at the age of 86, TMZ reports.

The outlet has reported an ambulance was dispatched to the actor's Los Angeles home Saturday (July 19) evening, but Garner was dead upon arrival. No cause of death has been reported at this time.

Garner was notably one of the first actors of his time to gain major success in both film and TV.  The actor played the title role in several long running TV series, including Jim Rockford in "The Rockford Files" from 1974-1980, as well as the role of Bret Maverick in the western series "Maverick" from 1957-1960, in addition to the short lived 80s remake.

Garner went on to co-star in the 1994 film version of "Maverick" alongside Mel Gibson. Many people will also recognize him from one of the most touching roles in the legendary romantic film "The Notebook" (2004), where he plays the older version of Ryan Gosling's character, Noah.

The actor is survived by his wife Lois and children. James and Lois married after only two weeks of dating and were together for 56 years.
