ABC's original "Extreme Makeover" was a show in which men and women volunteered to undergo extreme plastic surgery, exercise classes, and wardrobe/hair styling until they barely resembled themselves. It was canceled after 3 seasons. Its first spin-off "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is decidedly less shallow, and has been a successful ABC staple for 8 seasons now.
Get ready for another spin-off, folks! "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" debuts on May 30, to air Mondays at 10 p.m. following "The Bachelorette." The eight-episode series was filmed over 365 days -- a feat never attempted by other weight-loss shows like "The Biggest Loser" or "Shedding for the Wedding."
According to ABC's press release, the show "will document the amazing makeover of eight courageous, 'super obese' people who, in an unprecedented 365 days, set out to safely lose half of their body weight, ultimately revealing an amazing metamorphosis."
The show defines "super obese" as a people who "exceed their estimated ideal weight by approximately 225 percent and who are roughly 200 pounds or more overweight." The series does not follow a group of people through their journey -- instead, like "Home Edition," each episode will focus on one person's year-long journey. They'll be guided by trainer and "transformation specialist" Chris Powell.
