ABC moves 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' to Fridays, hopes families go with it
First, the network hopes to move the needle some on Fridays by attracting the family viewing audience that's watched "Home Edition" on Sundays.
"When you look at that audience, it's a classic audience for family viewing," ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee told reporters Tuesday morning (May 17). There are mothers, there are older viewers, there are young viewers available. So we think that's the perfect place to take 'Extreme Makeover' and move Friday back to family viewing night."
It may also be an acknowledgement that "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" isn't the ratings-grabber it once was. This season the show has averaged 8.5 million viewers and a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49, which is down a bit from last year and well off its heyday of a few seasons back. Still, if the show is able to take most of its current audience to Friday nights, that would be a pretty good-sized upgrade for ABC.
The move also lets ABC create a three-hour block of dramas Sunday nights. Two new shows, "Once Upon a Time" and "Pan Am," will sandwich "Desperate Housewives" next season to make the night's only drama block on broadcast TV. (NBC will have "Sunday Night Football," FOX has its animated comedies and CBS is likely to stick with reality shows leading into a 10 p.m. drama).
"I've always felt that Sunday night is a real place for appointment television," Lee says. "This is true of the country where I came from [the U.K.], it's true of HBO, and it's been true at ABC for many years. It's a night where you just want to watch the television -- you're going to work tomorrow. I want great TV."
