Alan Gendreau: Openly gay kicker could be the first in the NFL

Alan Gendreau might end up being the first openly gay kicker in the NFL. Though reports have been speculating a closeted football player might come out soon, it's the Middle Tennessee State kicker who might be the sport's first homosexual athlete if he gets picked up by a team in 2013.

"All those kids playing sports in the South or anywhere else, kids who are afraid to be themselves, I just want to put my arm around them and help them," Gendreau tells Outsports. "And if my story can do that, I figure I owe it to them to give it the best ending I can."

He could make history just for being the first openly gay athlete to try out for the NFL and, if he does well, the first openly gay player to make a roster. Gendreau has been out to his family and friends since he was 15. He is the Sun Belt Conference's leading scorer.

"I'm a kicker that happens to be gay," Gendreau says in a separate interview the New York Times. "It's part of who I am, and not everything I am. I just want to be known as a normal kicker."
