Alex Trebek on crutches after 'Jeopardy' host injured during burglar chase
The 71-year-old Canadian arrived in crutches at the July 27 National Geographic World Championship at Google's California headquarters after injuring his leg, chasing down a burglar.
Patch reports Trebek opened the final round of geography bee by explaining the battle wound. "What is, it happened at 2:30 a.m., chasing a burglar down the hallway of my San Francisco hotel," Trebek said. "My Achilles tendon ruptured and I then fell on carpet, bruising the other leg in process. Surgery on Friday."
Stoic, modest and hilariously candid -- especially for someone who was just roused from their slumber by a stranger rifling around their room.
TMZ reports the suspect, 56-year-old Lucinda Moyers, was booked on felony burglary and possession of stolen property charges. She allegedly took some cash and a bracelet Trebek's mother game him before stashing them in one of the hotel's ice rooms.
As for the Championship, the Russian team took home the top prize.
