AMC orders martial arts drama 'Badlands' straight to series

al-gough-badlands-gi.jpgProving AMC has a lot of faith in its product, the cable network has given a straight to series order to their martial arts drama "Badlands." This marks the third straight to series order AMC has ever given a show, joining "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad" prequel "Better Call Saul."

"Badlands" is said to be very loosely based on the classic Chinese tale "Journey to the West," in which a group of pilgrims take a journey towards enlightenment, only to find they need to work together as a team to get it.

The new AMC series is described as "a story of a great warrior and young boy who embark on a journey through dangerous lands to enlightenment."

"Badlands" was created by Al Gough (above) and Miles Millar ("Shanghai Noon," "Smallville"). The two will serve as executive producers along with the Stacy Sher and Michael Shamberg ("Pulp Fiction," "Contagion") in addition to expert martial-arts filmmakers, Daniel Wu and Stephen Fung.

The network has ordered six episodes of the series and it is set to premiere in late 2015 or early 2016.
