Amendment 1: North Carolina vote passes gay marriage ban

Though gay marriage was already illegal in the state, the amendment represents another barrier to prevent progress for equal rights activists.

The amendment, which states, "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State," also invalidates domestic partnerships and unions between heterosexual partners.

The vote was opposed by several prominent TV stars. "Will & Grace" star Eric McCormack tweeted, "North Carolina: DO THE RIGHT THING. #voteagainstamendment1! Marriage should be about love. PERIOD."

Sophia Bush from "One Tree Hill" -- which shot for 9 seasons in Wilmington, NC -- tweeted "#ToleranceIsSexy so North Carolina #VoteAgainst #Amendment1 tomorrow. #LoveIsLove Help spread the word."

Her one-time co-star James Van Der Beek agreed: "Dear NC, I know you hate outsiders telling u how to vote, but rejecting #amendmentone would show everyone how cool y'all really are."

Ellen DeGeneres tweeted, "Getting married was one of the greatest things I have ever done. I hope everyone in North Carolina gets the same opportunity someday."
