'American Horror Story: Coven' 'Fearful Pranks Ensue': Halloween brings an army of zombies

american-horror-story-coven-marie-laveau.jpg "American Horror Story: Coven" brings us a fun Halloween offering, delving more into various characters' backstories plus adding a delightfully creepy cliffhanger.

Fiona Goode and the Supremes

The Council has come to town to investigate Madison's disappearance. Nan called them because she can no longer "hear" Madison in her head. Myrtle (Frances Conroy) is the head of the council and she's had a rivalry with Fiona since they were classmates at Miss Robichaux's back in the 1970s. Myrtle has always suspected Fiona killed Annaleigh in order to take her place as Supreme and now she suspects she killed Madison.

Myrtle is right, of course, but it turns out butler Spaulding has been in love with Fiona since way back when and he's willing to protect her -- even if it meant cutting out his own tongue 40 years ago to keep him from being compelled to testify against Fiona to the then-Council.

This isn't even Spaulding's creepiest thing, either. He has a massive doll collection, likes to dress up like a woman for tea parties with them, and he's keeping Madison's body in his attic area, ready to dress her up too. Ew.

And after all Fiona's dastardly deeds, Cordelia reveals that Madison wasn't even the next Supreme. Madison suffered from a heart murmur, which she kept hidden -- Supremes are always the pinnacle of health.

Our money's still on Misty the Swamp Girl.

The Witches' War

In addition to Marie Laveau and Madame Delphine going head-to-head in the 1830s, it also turns out that a group of white men lynched the teenaged son of one of Marie's employees back in the early 1960s. Marie set a group of zombies on them as vengeance and it sounds like a war was started.

We assume we'll get more information in later episodes about the years between the zombies and the truce, which was called between Marie and Annaleigh in 1971, but suffice to say that now, with Fiona threatening Marie and Marie then sending her Minotaur after Delphine and instead leaving Queenie almost dead and then Fiona sending the Minotaur's head back in a box, the war is back on.

The episode ends with Marie Laveau sending an army of zombies, including Delphine's daughters, to attack the school. That should be fun. We hope the neighbor boy survives.

Thoughts & Tidbits

  • Alexandra Breckenridge is back (briefly), as a fling for Hank when he's out of town on business. But it turns out he's "a monster" and he shoots her in the head over breakfast. Can't wait to find out what's going on there -- is he some kind of beast? Is that maybe why they can't conceive?
  • Zoe and Kyle are barely in the episode, which is OK. That plot definitely doesn't fit with the flow of the rest. Basically, he just escapes and Zoe has no idea where he is, though she was probably going to kill him with rat poison. What about his mom's body? We're assuming Zoe got rid of it?
  • Love Robin Bartlett and Leslie Jordan as the other Council members. More of the Council, please.
  • What do you think was going on with Cordelia and the drink thrown in her face in the bathroom? Was that alcohol? Holy water?
  • Best Lines:

    Delphine
: "Evil spirits walk the earth this night. The dead shall rise and fearful pranks ensue, should we fail to protect ourselves."

    Fiona
: "Tonight I'm gonna let the whole world in -- get a good look at me. Who's the baddest witch in town?"

    Cordelia
: "Do you read TMZ? Madison's already spent more time with us than at any rehab facility she's been sentenced to. She's a special case."

What did you think of "Fearful Pranks Ensue"?
