'American Horror Story' star to play Quicksilver in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'

Evan Peters, who has appeared in both seasons of the cable horror anthology series, has joined the cast of "X-Men: Days of Future Past," director Bryan Singer announced on Thursday (May 23) via Twitter. Peters will portray Quicksilver in the upcoming film.

"Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver," the director wrote. Quicksilver is the son of super-villain Magneto (portrayed by both Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen in the franchise's history). The character first appeared in Issue No. 4 of Marvel's "X-Men" comic. He, along with sister the Scarlet Witch, later became a member of The Avengers.

The inclusion of Quicksilver in the new "X-Men" film poses an interesting dilemma for the Marvel universe. Writer-director Joss Whedon recently revealed that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch would be a part of "Avengers 2," which is being produced by Marvel Studios. ("X-Men: Days of Future Past" is produced by Fox.) Could there be a crossover between studios? Unlikely, but with this casting, it's certainly now a possibility.

The upcoming film represents a merger of the two existing "X-Men" film franchises, with "First Class" cast members Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult joining original trilogy stars McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Shawn Ashmore to reprise their roles. Peter Dinklage is also on board as an unspecified villain.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is due to hit theaters July 18, 2014.
