'American Idol': Dr. Luke will not judge Season 13

Dr. Luke will not be a judge on "American Idol" Season 13. Although the producer and songwriter's name has been mentioned as a sure thing in many recent reports, a label conflict and time constraints seem to be at the root of the decline.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dr. Luke's current contract with Sony Music made work with Universal Music Group (which covers "Idol") complicated. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, also has too many producing commitments to make the time needed for judging feasible.

As the producer of such hits as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You," as well as non-"Idol" names like Pink and Katy Perry, Dr. Luke seemed like an ideal choice to identify and nurture pop talent on the show. The two remaining judges for "Idol" Season 13 -- Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban -- in contrast, are more associated with performance than production.

This doesn't leave too many names left in the "American Idol" judges' pool. Scooter Braun, the manager of Justin Bieber and other pop stars, has reportedly been asked but might be too busy. Jennifer Hudson, an early name rumored as a judge, has apparently been scrapped. Other possibilities have reportedly declined the job opportunity.
