'American Idol' finale: Top 2 BFFs Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson say things won't get awkward
"Yes. It's going to get totally awkward," jokes Jena backstage after the final performance show. "No, we're extremely happy no matter what happens. We've had a bunch of pep talks, especially leading up to tonight, and I'm so thankful that we're even here. I surpassed my goal. I wanted Top 5 so just to be here is amazing."
It'll probably be emotional for Caleb, who tells Zap2it that losing his roommate in Top 3 week was difficult -- he and Alex Preston also grew close throughout the competition.
"He had been my roommate the whole time throughout the whole thing, so me and him have a really great, strong friendship," Johnson says. "It sucked so bad when he was cut Top 3 because he had to move out. I cried that night - I'm being 100 percent serious, y'all think I'm B.S.ing - but I cried that night because we had been through so much together, then he was gone."
Of course, the Top 13 were reunited for finale rehearsals shortly thereafter, but still -- it was different. Regardless, Caleb and Jena will remain close, and they're even considering molding their careers after the first "American Idol" Top 2 duo: Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson, for "From Justin to Kelly 2."
Jokes Caleb, "Yeah, it's actually in the works right now. We're going to do like a weird, 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'-type take on it."
As if you wouldn't totally watch that.
"American Idol" will crown a 13th winner on Wednesday (May 21) in a two-hour finale starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
