'American Idol' Inspirational Songs: What should the Top 7 sing?

american-idol-top-7-inspiral-songs.jpgThe Inspirational Song choices are available on iTunes, so we thought we'd offer some suggestions for the "American Idol" Top 7.

We will admit that the song list is rather weird -- some of the songs don't exactly strike us as "inspirational," plus you have to automatically discount certain songs. For example...

The Idols should probably steer clear of the other Idol songs. Like "A Moment Like This" is the No. 1 Kelly Clarkson "Idol" moment, so we're not sure they should try that one. Doing other Idol hits is just a little too meta. We'd call that a big no-no.

Then there are the over-played barf-worthy songs like "Greatest Love of All" and "That's What Friends Are For." We'd advise steering clear of those too, especially since "Greatest Love" should just be retired after Cordelia Chase did it for the "Buffy" talent show. Then there are a few duets on the list, which is just like ... what? Do they sing both parts? How does that work? Those are just going to sound weird. So it's a hard list to choose from.

Here are our picks for the Top 7 Idols:

Tim Urban: "You're the Inspiration" by Chicago
This is a slower, kinda cheesy ballad that would allow to Tim to give wide-eyed earnest looks to the camera. Our runner-up choices for Tim were "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac and "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack.

Aaron Kelly: "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts
Aaron already has that Rascal Flatts sound going on, so this is a natural choice for him. The only other song we considered was "Go the Distance" from "Hercules," but that's just a little too on-the-nose Disney cheesefest come to life, so we'd like to see him on Rascal Flatts.

Casey James: "Live Like You Were Dying" by Tim McGraw
Casey knows he's in the country lane and this is a really nice "Cat's in the Cradle" father-son song. The female voters would eat it up. If not this one, then for a slightly faster, more rock sound we like "Drive" by Incubus or for a very slow, intimate acoustic moment we like "You've Got a Friend" by Carole King.

Michael Lynche: "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
This is tough because it's such a classic, but Michael's voice is so different from Armstrong's that we think he could pull it off. It certainly fits with his big cuddly teddy bear image. If he wanted to go a little more current, we'd suggest "Stronger" by Mary J. Blige and if he wanted to do Michael Jackson (like he told us he wanted to do), he could probably pull off "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5.

Siobhan Magnus: "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler
Siobhan's had two slow weeks and the judges are pestering her to let her big pipes sail, so we think she would rock this '80s song. However, we had a hard time picking for her because we'd also like to hear Siobhan on "I'll Stand by You" by The Pretenders or "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House." Maybe Siobhan should just sing three songs!

Lee Dewyze: "Hero" by Chad Kroeger
Lee was hard because, like Siobhan, there were a bunch of songs we think he would do well. "Hero" probably suits his voice the best, but we'd also love "Heroes" by Robbie Williams, "Calling All Angels" by Train or "River of Dreams" by Billy Joel.

Crystal Bowersox: "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel

This was the first choice we made. This song is quietly awesome and we can just hear Crystal's voice on it. We will actually be so disappointed if she doesn't sing "The Boxer," though we're sure whatever she does will sound great. Other choices we like for her are "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright or "You're My Best Friend" by Queen.
