'American Idol' judges on why they chose to do 'Idol,' what their families think

american-idol-judges-320.jpg Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are the newest "American Idol" judges. Find out why they chose to be a part of the "Idol" family and what their family and friends think about their new endeavor.

Lopez tells the press that part of the reason she wanted to do the show was because she's always been such a fan of "American Idol."

"I'm just a huge fan of the show and I always have been," says Lopez. "Like I said before, my career has always been the type that is changing and evolving and I'm always trying different things that people think I maybe shouldn't' do at the time. If it feels right in my gut, I go for it and it felt right. I'm going to give it 100% and give it my whole heart and soul and passion and I'm looking forward to such a fun year."

Tyler echoes her sentiments and is excited to be a part of the process.

"I always loved the outcomes. I always loved the kids crying and screaming ... kids trying to do something, having a say in that," says Tyler. "Get a chance to mingle with them in whatever they do best, whether they sing or can't sing or need character, I think I can add to that."

As for their families (or bandmates), both Lopez and Tyler are excited to be stationary in Los Angeles for several months, which gives them both a break from their respective hectic schedules.

"[Husband Marc Anthony] is excited for me. I don't know that we ever thought that I'd do something like this ... We're also really happy that we get to be in one place with the babies for awhile," laughs Lopez. "Our life is so much about traveling ... and this is going to put us here for like six months and that's unheard of for us."

"Different answer, same content. With the band, we've been married for 40 years, five guys, whcih makes it even worse than women. I could go on for an hour explaining that," Tyler jokes. "At first they were jealous, they heard it through the press and not through me ... I'm sure they're very happy for me. And it's good, I like it."

And finally, returning judge Randy Jackson says about his and Ryan Seacrest's feelings, "Ryan and I couldn't feel better or stronger about this judging panel."
