'American Idol' rocker Caleb Johnson's dream date with Jennifer Lopez
They'd "go out to Malibu, pop some bottles, crank up some R. Kelly and take it from there," Johnson jokes in an interview with a small group of reporters.
In all seriousness, Johnson felt great about his performance of "Dazed and Confused," especially since he got to rock out with Rickey Minor and the "Idol" house band.
"I wish they would've been out there with me since day one because that's what I wanted," he says. "That's the career I want to have. I can feel them. Ricky was getting down, the guitar player was getting down."
In fact, he wishes they could be out there every week. "I think Keith [Urban] had made a comment saying something like we need to get you away from the band, but that's not what I want. I don't want to be a pop star. I want to have that band right there with me. It's my band of brothers."
Johnson says he's happy to be on "Idol" during Season 13 rather than in some of the other years he auditioned because he's really grown as a performer.
"I was a different person" back then, he says. "If they were to show the package at that audition I would be totally different. It's kind of weird to see. Over time and as you play shows you kind of come into your own self. You're like, 'Okay, I now know who I am as a person, as a singer, as a performer.' People can see right through when it's fake and it's forced and you're not into it. It's coming from the heart. It's coming from my heart."
