'American Idol' Season 9: Lee DeWyze vs. Crystal Bowersox

csox-lee-dewyze.jpg "American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.

We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.

We've looked back at Season 1 ( yay Kelly!), Season 2 ( aww, Clay and Ruben!), the  black hole that was Season 3,  one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and  Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6, the David vs. David finale of Season 7 and the game-changing season of Glambert.

Now let's look at Simon's last season.

Season 9 contestants in order of elimination:

Lacey Brown
Paige Miles
Didi Benami
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
Tim Urban
Siobhan Magnus
Aaron Kelly
Michael Lynche
Casey James
Crystal Bowersox
Lee DeWyze (winner)

Best performance: "Falling Slowly," Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox

Despite people thinking this was the worst season ever (and there were a lot of problems), finalists Lee and Crystal turned in consistently good performances, so when they collaborated, we were in heaven. It was a very good number.

Worst performance: "Sweet Love," Tim Urban

Tim Urban was easily the worst Idol, though this is not his worst performance. But it led to one of the greatest Simon Cowell moments in the history of the show. Watch the video all the way to end.

Most underrated Idol: Didi Benami

Didi was just another victim to the "cute boys last a long time whether they can sing or not" phenomenon. We thought she had a very pretty voice and we would put her "Terrified," "Rhiannon" and "Play With Fire" performances up there with some of the best of the season.

Most overrated Idol: Aaron Kelly, Tim Urban, Andrew Garcia (tie)

Season 9 was the worst so far of talented women going home before less talented men. We hope Season 10 is better, but since we can all kinda tell who actually votes, we aren't holding out hope. These boys were not better than Didi Benami or Paige Miles and Aaron is the only one better than Lacey Brown. In fact, we thought Alex Lambert, Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott were all better than all three of these boys.

How this season stacks up: Not-so-good

Simon had checked out, there were too many judges, Ellen was distracting more than helpful, and there were major problems in who went home each week. That being said, we still think the right two were in the finals. Lee and Crystal were strong, if quietly powerful, performers and we enjoyed them week after week.
