'American Idol' Top 2 singles: Hear Jena Irene's 'We Are One' and Caleb Johnson's 'As Long As You Love Me'
"We were given a song by the label [Interscope Records], which I think was a good choice because throughout this whole process the label has gotten to know what kind of artists we are and what songs we would like to sing post-'American Idol'. So I think they fit us pretty well," Jena says.
Her dancey, radio-friendly "We Are One" certainly fits with the EDM-influenced vibe she's carried throughout the Season 13 live shows, as does Caleb's upbeat rocker "As Long As You Love Me," which was written by The Darkness' Justin Hawkins.
"I'm really happy with ['We Are One'] and it's really cool that it was released a week early so everyone was familiar with the song," Jena says. Adds Caleb, "It's a really cool test drive of the songs, to release them a week in advance before the live shows."
And although you can hear Caleb's full-force rock growl throughout his song, he actually recorded it while suffering from a vocal hemorrhage. "We recorded the songs the previous week, so we already had those in the can to release," he says. "What's crazy is that my voice had gone out, and I actually recorded that song when my voice was blown out. It was a really stressful week, but we got it done."
