'Anger Management': Pickup pretty much a lock, Martin Sheen joining cast

anger-management-martin-sheen.jpgFX won't announce a pickup for "Anger Management" until after the show's initial 10 episodes air, but the head of the network says the odds are "overwhelming" it will happen.

At his session with the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday (July 28), FX president and general manager John Landgraf says episodes 3 through 6 of the show have exceeded the ratings threshold that will trigger a 90-episode, syndication-ready pickup.

"It's exciting as hell," star Charlie Sheen says of the prospect of doing 90 more episodes. "I don't think 90 is going to be enough."

If (or more likely when) "Anger Management" does return, Sheen's father, Martin Sheen, will join the cast as a regular in a recurring role, playing Charlie the character's dad. Martin Sheen will guest-star in an episode scheduled for Aug. 16.

Ratings for "Anger Management" have fallen off by a good amount since the show's huge premiere (which won't be counted toward the pickup benchmark). Subsequent episodes have averaged about 2.8 million viewers.

An earlier version of this post stated Martin Sheen would be a regular on "Anger Management" based on information provided by FX. The network has clarified its statement and says Martin Sheen will have a recurring part.
