ann-curry-short-haircut.jpg Ann Curry has not been seen much on NBC since her departure from "Today" last summer -- though tales of how that went down have been all over the news.

However, Curry was back last week to help in the coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and subsequent manhunt. She was sporting a noticeably shorter, sleeker hairdo and Radar Online is reporting that she did it without any approval from NBC.

(Curry is pictured above, left, in late 2012 and above, right, last week while interviewing a Boston bombing survivor.)

A source close to the situation says, "Ann was always told by her bosses that her hair had to be long, and she just didn't like to wear it at that length. She is a no-fuss gal, and doesn't want to spend a ton of time styling her hair."

Makes sense.

"About a week ago, she just decided to cut it," the source continues. "It's a much shorter style, and doesn't take as long to do. Ann didn't tell her bosses she was going to do it beforehand. NBC on air talent is required to notify management if they plan on making any changes to their physical appearance."

Another reason for the noteworthy-ness of the sassy new 'do? In reports about Curry's last few months at "Today," sources say that her colleagues at the show would poke fun at her style quite frequently.

Perhaps Curry is dusting herself off with this small act of defiance.
