Annette Bening, 'The Kids Are All Right' get a Golden Globes bounce
The movie won the award for best picture/comedy or musical Sunday night (Jan. 16), and Annette Bening was named best actress in a comedy or musical. She played half of a lesbian couple (along with Julianne Moore) whose tidy lives are disrupted when their kids ( Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) track down the man ( Mark Ruffalo) whose donated sperm made their lives possible.
"The Kids Are All Right" made a bunch of year-end best lists, and both the film and Bening have picked up a couple of critics awards in recent weeks. But the movie, which was released in July and is already available on home video, hasn't really been at the front of the conversation among best picture contenders for the Oscars.
The Golden Globes aren't always the greatest Oscar predictor, and since Academy Awards ballots were due a couple of days ago, the wins for "Kids" and Bening on Sunday won't influence Oscar voting. But if it leads more people to find the movie -- which had great performances all around and a really sharp script by director Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg -- that would be a win too.
