Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver: A timeline

schwarzenegger-shriver-gi.jpgOn Tuesday (May 9) Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver announced their separation after 25 years of marriage. Although TMZ claims the split was two years in the making, it caught most of us by surprise. We thought a review of their courtship and marriage was in order.

1977 -- NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw introduces Shriver and Schwarzenegger at a charity tennis tournament.

1984 -- "The Terminator" opens in the U.S. Schwarzenegger is a confirmed action star.

1985 - 1987: Shriver co-anchors the "CBS Morning News" with Forrest Sawyer.

April 26, 1986 -- Arnold and Maria marry in Cape Cod.

1987 - 1990 -- Shriver appears as a correspondent for NBC's "Today," often sitting in as co-host.

December 13, 1989 -- First child, Katherine Eunice Shriver Schwarzenegger, born.

July 23, 1991 -- Christina Maria Aurelia born.

Sept. 18, 1993 -- Patrick Arnold Schwarzenegger born.

Sept. 27, 1997 -- Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger born.

Aug. 6, 2003 -- Schwarzenegger announces his candidacy for California governor on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Oct. 7, 2003 -- Schwarzenegger is elected governor of California in a recall election that resulted in his predecessor, Gray Davis, being removed from office.

Oct. 2003 -- Schwarzenegger apologizes for "offending people" after reports that he'd groped women for a 25 year period emerge.

Nov. 7, 2006 -- The Governator is re-elected for another term.

Jan. 3, 2011 -- Amid state budget crises Schwarzenegger leaves office, soon announces his plans to rekindle his film career. 

May 9, 2011 -- Arnold and Maria publicly announce their separation. Shriver allegedly moved out of their Brentwood mansion weeks earlier.
