'Arrested Development' Rewatch: Season 2, episode 15 - 'Sword of Destiny' welcomes Ben Stiller
Plot: Michael has to be admitted to the hospital at one of the worst possible times for the Bluth Company, leaving his new assistant Tobias to take over without Michael's approval. Meanwhile, Gob wants to get back in the good graces of the Magician's Alliance and devises a plan to pretend to be Buster's assistant at a Gothic Castle booking to impress Tony Wonder ( Ben Stiller). Also, Lindsay teaches George Michael how to drive.
Bluth Company status: Troubled. A contract to build 22 houses has been cut to 18 (in a not-so-thinly-veiled metaphor for FOX cutting the show's Season 2 episode order), and Michael wants to reassure the employees everything will be OK
Notable guest stars: Although Tony Wonder had been briefly seen earlier in Season 2, Stiller makes his first flesh-and-blood appearance in this episode. (He'll be back for Season 4). Also, Dan Castellaneta (a.k.a. the voice of Homer Simpson) makes his only appearance as Dr. Stein (and, yes, he says "D'oh!"), and Mo Collins makes her final appearance as Michael's assistant Starla.
Milestones: Frequent "Arrested" director Paul Feig (who would go on to direct "Bridesmaids") makes an on screen cameo as the Gothic Castle booker who tells Tobias what time he'll take the stage.
Huge mistakes: George Sr. makes a video to bolster company morale but when it leaks the FBI believes it's evidence he's hiding in one of Saddam Hussein's houses in Iraq.
Most sexual tension: See the evidence of Tobias' repressed attraction to Michael below.
Allusions to Tobias being gay: When he gives Michael advice, Tobias says he's "taking off [his] skirt" and donning a "Barbra Streisand in 'The Prince of Tides' ass-masking therapist pantsuit." Later, during the Bluth Company meeting, Tobias announces Michael is doing fine because he caught a peek of Michael's butt and it's "as fresh and firm as a Georgia peach," and at the hospital when everyone's speculating what might be wrong with Michael, Tobias suggests it could be his colon and he'd like to "get in there and find some answers."
Best narrator commentary: Michael complains that the company already had blueprints drawn up for the houses when their order is cut, the narrator says, "Well that part wasn't true, but they would have." Just like the show would've had storylines mapped out for episodes 19-22, if FOX hadn't reduced the order.
Next on "Arrested Development": "Michael gets a new roommate" [Dr. Stein reattaches Gob's fingers after the Gothic Castle performance, but reverses the position of the middle and index fingers] "and the FBI finds footage more troublesome than they'd originally thought" [George Michael's "Star Wars" kid video].
