'Arrow': Caity Lotz on the Black Canary and the past and future of Sara LanceAdd to Favorites | Arrow
When will we learn more about how Sara became the Black Canary?
Caity Lotz: I think, in the upcoming episodes, especially the next one, we really get to dive into Sara's backstory and what happened to her and how she became this new version of Sara that she is today.
How would you describe the character?
Caity Lotz: She is tough. She's not a damsel in distress. What I'm hoping with her is that you feel her core has that strength, so she's believable.
What is the relationship like between Sara and Oliver?
Caity Lotz: I think their relationship's super-complicated. They have this shared past together, but there's still some big chunks of time missing that they don't know, that changed them. So there's a lot they don't know about each other, who they are now. I think presently Sara has so much darkness within her that any kind of relationship with anybody is difficult for her. She's not used to trusting anybody. And Oliver comes in with this genuine care, but she's very tentative about it and doesn't know how to accept it.
Is Sara going to have any sort of relationship with her father and sister?
Caity Lotz: I know Sara doesn't want to, she doesn't want to see her family. She doesn't want to go back into their lives, because she doesn't think she's worthy of love. So she wants to stay out of it. And she also wants to keep them safe. She knows there's a lot of danger surrounding her and her past is still chasing her. She doesn't want that to catch up to her family.
When did you find out exactly who your character was?
Caity Lotz: Well, I definitely didn't know it at first. The audition was for some character named "Lisa," and the sides were something they just made up. And even when I got the part, I still didn't know what the part was. It wasn't until I came into a meeting with one of the producers, Andrew Kreisberg, he told me who I was playing -- about Sara and about the Canary.
How are the fight scenes going?
Caity Lotz: I love doing fight scenes! I have a martial arts background and a dance background, so it's a lot of fun. And it's hard! Using a bow-staff -- I had never used that weapon before. So I did get a lot of bumps and bruises from it. But we have an amazing stunt team and an amazing stunt coordinator, so it's always awesome.
"Arrow" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
