Attorney offers a free divorce for Valentine's Day
A Michigan attorney, Walter H. Bentley III is offering one lucky client the chance to divorce for free this February 14. And it sounds like people are loving it.
According to a notice posted on Bentley's website, the lawyer will offer his services for one free divorce on Valentine's Day. Interested parties must fill out a form on the website itself, giving the story about why they should win this anti-love prize. Bentley's office will then choose one winner based on "the most compelling and convincing story."
Of course, there is some fine print -- this is a legal matter, after all. In order to qualify for the free deal, an interested party must be filing for an uncontested divorce, and there can be only minimal child custody issues. Entrants also must be residents of Michigan.
With less than a day remaining until the Feb. 12 deadline (at 11:59pm ET), will anyone take advantage of this unusual offer?
Oh yes... ABC News reports that, as of Monday (Feb. 11), almost 500 people had submitted applications.
Why would an attorney offer such a deal? ABC News got an explanation from Bentley. He first had the idea when a female friend decided to celebrate her own divorce. "I'd never thought about that before -- celebrating divorce," Bentley said. "So, I thought, why not do something special for Valentine's Day? You can't find a new love before you close the chapter on the old."
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!
