'Avatar' sinks 'Titanic's' box-office bounty
James Cameron's "Avatar" has surpassed his other theatrical juggernaut "Titanic" as the top-grossing film of all time, earning more than $1.843 billion at the box office worldwide, according to estimates by sources at 20th Century Fox
The live action/CGI movie pulled in nearly $35 million domestic over the weekend, but it's how the film does on foreign shores that gives the big bump.
"Avatar," which has been out for six weeks, is a futuristic tale set in 2154, when humans are mining precious minerals from the moon Pandora and use genetically engineered bodies of Pandora's humanoid species the Na'vi to interact on the natives.
