The Team Jake vs. Team Matty competition began when the cast of MTV's "Awkward" (returning for a second season June 28) first met.
"We were all joking about Team Jake team Matty when shooting the pilot," Brett Davern, who plays Jake, tells Zap2it. "It took on a life of its own. The social media has created that. Fans have latched on and it has been really fun to see. They definitely have who they are rooting for."
The question is should people be on Team Jake? Sure he is the cute, blond, class president, a jock and very sweet, but he did cheat on his girlfriend.
Greer Grammer, who plays that ex, Lissa, says, "Jake is such a nice boy. I guess he cheated on his girlfriend. I am very Team Matty."
But Davern has solid reasons for why everyone should root for him to win over the star, Jenna ( Ashley Rickards).
"Jake is the kind of boyfriend you would want to have," Davern says. "He is definitely not afraid to be in public with Jenna. He is constantly telling her exactly how he feels. He is the kind of guy you want to bring home to mom, or hopefully bring home to mom -- not that Matty is not. He is just being a little immature. The way he wants to keep her secret and the way he cares about what people think about him.
"And, he is always smelling his armpits," Davern continues. "Do you want a boyfriend who is always smelling his armpits?"
