Barack Obama didn't know about Beyonce and Jay-Z's Cuba trip: 'We've got better things to do'
Though Barack Obama and Jay-Z might be close, the President of the United States is not privy to the rapper's travel plans. So, despite the message sent in Jay-Z's new song "Open Letter" where he references talking to Obama about his recent trip with wife Beyonce to Cuba, the POTUS really knew nothing about it.
"I wasn't familiar that they were taking the trip," he says on "Today." "This is not something the White House was involved with -- we've got better things to do."
Obama's potential involvement in approving Jay-Z and Beyonce's fifth wedding anniversary vacation to Cuba came to light after Jay-Z rapped in "Open Letter," "Obama said, 'Chill you gonna get me impeached.' You don't need this s**t anyway, chill with me on the beach.'" The day the song was released, Obama's press secretary, Jay Carney, denied any truth to Jay-Z's claims.
"It's a song. The president's not communicating with Jay-Z over this trip," Carney said. "I guess nothing rhymes with Treasury. The White House, from the president on down, had nothing to do with anybody's ... travel to Cuba. That is something that Treasury handles."
The U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed that Jay-Z and Beyonce's trip was not approved individually, but as a part of an "education exchange trip" organized by an outside group. The group was not required to provide the Treasury Department with a list of passenger names.
