battlestar-galactica-cast-syfy.jpgThere's good news and bad news, "Battlestar Galactica" (2003) fans -- a movie is in the works, but it's not a continuation the Syfy series.

Variety reports that "Transcendence" writer Jack Paglen has signed on with Universal to write the screenplay for a movie version of the franchise that will completely re-imagine the story, which will presumably at least revolve around humans battling the Cylons for Earth.

Universal's executive vice president of production Scott Bernstein and director of development Jay Polidoro will oversee this version, but there are no other details available at this time.

The two previous versions, the two-season 1978 original and the critically-acclaimed reboot that launched as a miniseries in 2003 and continued on for four seasons beginning in 2004, share many core characters -- Commander Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, Col. Tigh, Boomer, Athena, Baltar -- but there is no word yet if the movie version will center around them or invent an entirely new cast of characters.

Which would you prefer to see, fans? Or do you think a "Battlestar Galactica" movie is a bad idea either way?
