Becki Newton heads to CBS for comedy pilot
Newton, formerly of "Ugly Betty," will star in a CBS comedy pilot (previously known as "Homegrown") from "That '70s Show" veterans Jackie and Jeff Filgo, according to several reports. She had been one of the more sought-after actresses this development season, getting offers for several shows.
The one that she took is a family comedy in which she'll play a single mom with a 12-year-old son who moves back in with her parents. The crowded household also includes her dad's recently widowed mother.
Had things broken differently, you might be seeing Newton on your TV now instead of (potentially) next season. She was one of the stars of NBC's star-crossed "Love Bites," which was picked up for this season but for a number of reasons -- one of which was Newton's pregnancy -- has never aired. It may run in the summer.
The CBS pilot will be the first sitcom role for Newton. In addition to "Ugly Betty," her credits include guest spots on "Law & Order: SVU," "American Dreams" and "Charmed."
