'Better Call Saul': New pics, more details on the 'Breaking Bad' spinoffAdd to Favorites | Breaking Bad
The show will be set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) meets Walter White -- and by the way, Saul is not named Saul. Here's how AMC describes the show:
"When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against Jimmy, is 'fixer' Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks). ... The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts 'criminal' in 'criminal lawyer.' The series' tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor."
That setting -- co-creator Vince Gilligan says it takes place in 2002 -- would seem to contradict earlier statements from Gilligan and fellow creator Peter Gould that "Saul" might jump around in time. Gilligan, however, hints that could still happen.
"We like nonlinear storytelling," Gilligan says. "We like jumping around in time. ... Anything that was possible on 'Breaking Bad,' storytelling-wise, is possible on 'Better Call Saul.' Because it's fun -- it's fun for us to be as nonlinear as possible."
The cast also includes Michael McKean -- who's playing Saul/Jimmy's brother Chuck -- Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando. AMC has already picked up two seasons of the show, which premieres in early 2015. Here's one more pic from the first episode, of Odenkirk and McKean.
