Bill Gates revealed as Reddit user's Secret Santa - yes, reallyAdd to Favorites | Good Morning America
Bill Gates proves that the greatest gift really is giving. The 58-year-old billionaire took part in a Reddit Secret Santa gift swap and surprised the lucky Redditor who received presents from him with a charitable donation.
Reddit user Rachel, who goes by the user name NY1227, details the gift-receiving experience in a lengthy post. Proving that the gifts were indeed from Gates courtesy of images of himself that he sent to her with her package, Rachel was understandably thrilled about the turn of events.
"The first thing I noticed was a stuffed animal. I didn't know I gave off the stuffed animal vibe, but I excitedly added him to my collection of teddy bears and other delightful friendly creatures. Next, I found the card. To me, from Bill. This still had not clicked, by the way, that it was Bill Gates," she recounts in a story that has since been picked up by news outlets like "Good Morning America."
"I thought Bill sounded like a friendly fellow. In fact, I had this whole image of this poor guy named Bill trying to navigate my wishlist full of makeup, nailpolish, glittery things to buy me," Rachel writes. "Quite frankly I felt bad for this 'Bill' since I'm a self identified pain in the a** to shop for. I finally opened the card and realized that 'Bill' (I use quotes, because like I said, I still didn't realize that this was THE Bill) had donated to a charity on my behalf."
The gift to go with the stuffed cow ended up being a $500 donation on Rachel's behalf to Heifer International. Since she has a master's degree in education, Rachel says that Gates totally "nailed it." He also gifted her with a travel book called "Journeys of a Lifetime," which was a response to Rachel's admitted love of travel. It was only after looking at this book that Rachel realized her "Bill" was Bill Gates.
"Then it finally hit me. All the presents I just tore open, the charity, then everything -- was from Bill GATES. I quickly went back to the book to see a really nice message and note from Bill wishing me a Merry Christmas and a Happy Birthday ... my jaw hit the EVER LOVING FLOOR. I went back to all the other gifts completely shocked," she writes. "I feel SO shocked and excited that not only did I receive a gift from Bill, but it was perfectly and EXACTLY tuned into my interests. My gosh, what a rush!! I cannot express how much I really loved reading about a new charity."
As it turns out, there was one small apology Rachel had to make in retrospect for a certain item on the Reddit Secret Santa list. "Sorry for the apple ipad on my wishlist, that was really awkward," she writes.
