Billboard Music Awards 2012: Cee Lo and Goodie Mob pay tribute to MCA

cee-lo-billboard-awards.jpgIn the spectrum of tributes at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday (May 20), Cee Lo Green and Goodie Mob's homage to Adam Yauch, MCA of the Beastie Boys, fell in between the remembrances of Donna Summer and Whitney Houston.

Goodie Mob did a verse and chorus of "Fight for Your Right" Sunday after performing their own track "Fight to Win" (and having their thunder stolen by one-legged dancer Jean Sok, who's part of Cirque du Soleil's "Michael Jackson Immortal" show). We dug the "Licensed to Ill" cover art in the background and the mosh pit behind the four MCs, even if the final shot of Cee Lo was a little goofy.

We're glad MCA was acknowledged in the show ( Wiz Khalifa also mentioned him before presenting an award) -- and also glad it didn't feel like an afterthought. We know Donna Summer only died a few days ago, but the way Natasha Bedingfield's tribute to her was produced felt pretty perfunctory, cutting away after only about 30 seconds.

As Wiz Khalifa mentioned in his shout-out, the Beastie Boys never won a Billboard Award. But they've been a big part of the musical landscape in the past 25 years, and we're happy to see MCA remembered.
