Billy Crystal starring in 'The Comedians' pilot at FX, Larry Charles to direct

billy-crystal-2013-gi.jpgFX is adding Billy Crystal to their stable of comedy stars, greenlighting the pilot "The Comedians" Crystal has been developing with Larry Charles ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"), Matt Nix ("Burn Notice") and Ben Wexler ("Arrested Development").

Charles (whose credits also include "Borat" and "Seinfeld") will direct the pilot, which stars Crystal as a comedy veteran who meets his match in an edgy young comedian on a late-night comedy sketch show. That will presumably give Crystal the opportunity to showcase some of the sketch comedy skills he demonstrated in his season as a regular on "Saturday Night Live."

Crystal's TV resume also includes a series regular gig on the late '70s comedy "Soap" and winning six Emmy awards, including four for his frequent hosting of the Academy Awards.

"It truly is an honor to be in business with Billy Crystal and Larry Charles, two of the all-time greats in comedy," FX president John Landgraf said in a statement. "We have also wanted for some time to be in business with Matt Nix, who has done such an amazing job creating and running 'Burn Notice.' They, along with Ben Wexler, are an unbeatable team and we're incredibly excited about this project."
