Finally, the identity of B.J. Novak's character in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is known. Director Marc Webb let word slip on Twitter that Novak is playing Alistair Smythe. Now that the role is out, who exactly is Alistair Smythe?
While it isn't expected that Novak has a major role in a movie that already has three enemies for Spider-Man, Alistair Smythe is a supervillain. He is responsible for a series of robots called Spider-Slayers that are meant to do exactly what the name implies, hunting Spider-Man throughout New York City.
Eventually, in an effort to defeat Spider-Man himself, Alistair encases himself in a bio-organic exoskeleton, which serves as body armor and increases his strength. At that point he was known as the Ultimate Spider-Slayer.
There are a couple possibilities as to why Webb would feature Smythe in the movie. Perhaps the character will be introduced with the idea of playing a bigger role in a future installment. There's also the distinct possibility that they are simply taking the name, without regard for the character's history. Novak, an executive producer and occasional guest star on "The Mindy Project," said himself that his character isn't "pivotal," but that could change down the road.
It's worth noting in the video game based on "The Amazing Spider-Man," Smythe is named head of research and development at Oscorp after Dr. Curt Connors is arrested. The Spider-Slayer robots also play a role in the game.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is in theaters May 2.
