Jiah Khan, an English-Indian actress best known for her debut performance in the controversial Bollywood film, "Nishabd," has died in an apparent suicide at the age of 25.

Although born in New York City and raised mostly in England, the young actress had recently moved to the Indian city of Mumbai with her mother. Those close to her apparently noted issues with depression, but the suicide was unexpected. Authorities in India discovered the body at about 11pm local time. There was no suicide note, but Khan seems to have died by hanging.

The Times of India quoted a source as saying "She had been depressed for some time due to personal issues, but was keen on returning to acting soon. She was also meeting filmmakers regarding projects."

Known both by her stage name of Jiah Khan and her birth name of Nafisa Khan, the actress had her debut performance in the Hindi-language film, "Nishabd." She appeared in two other films, 2008's "Ghajini" and 2010's "Housefull."

Khan was a regular Twitter user with over 150,000 followers, but her most recent post was on May 24 when she wrote:

"So sorry I have been off twitter! Took a bit of a break from twitter verse.. sometimes u need a sabbatical to recollect ur thoughts"
