'Bones' Season 9, episode 22: Who is the Ghost Killer in 'The Nail in the Coffin'?

"Bones" Season 9 has been casually teasing the existence of a new serial killer, the Ghost Killer for almost a year now. But up until "The Nail in the Coffin," the whole thing could have been a Christopher Pelant dream turned into a Brennan obsession.

Now it's real. And the Ghost Killer is Stephanie McNamara.

That's not the end of the story though -- Stephanie is actually the victim in "The Nail in the Coffin," murdered and left to hang in a tree out in the woods (much to the shock of a camping family). Who killed the killer?

The answer to that question goes back decades, because the McNamara family was truly insane in the worst possible way. Daddy Giles McNamara used to lock little Stephanie in a horse stable -- the child eventually clawed off all of her fingernails. A few years later, Giles raped a classmate of Stephanie's named Maya Zinkow.

Shortly afterward, Maya became Stephanie's first victim because the poor girl just wanted Daddy's attention.

Fingernail-less Stephanie began taking nails from her victims to replace her own, eventually creating a full set with the Ghost Killer's victims. She was wearing them when someone killed the Ghost Killer.

Who did it? That would be the man who went to jail decades earlier for the murder of Maya. A biology teacher named Kessler took the fall for the McNamara family and is using his freedom to exact revenge. In addition to Stephanie, the judge in the case -- now a Congressman -- turns up dead.

Thus, the Ghost Killer case is over. And another killer has been brought to justice. Those questions have been answered.

Now fans can turn to a new question for the final episodes of "Bones" Season 9: Will Booth take his well-earned promotion and what would that mean for the show?

"Bones" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on FOX.
