'Bones': Will we see a marriage proposal this season? Should we?
That works. But now, as we near the end of the season, is it time for Brennan to pop the question? Should she? What could possibly encourage this eminently rational person to suddenly change her belief that marriage serves no purpose?
There are definite hints that "Bones" is heading in the direction of a marriage proposal, probably sooner rather than later. The most recent episode, "The Blood from the Stones," for example, gave us an entire scene with virtually no purpose other than a discussion on proposals and engagement rings. Sure, Brennan hedged like crazy and refused to budge on her anti-marriage stance, but the idea was out there.
This couldn't possibly be the end of it. After all, why waste a recognizable actor like Curtis Armstrong ( "Revenge of the Nerds," "Moonlighting") on a single, short scene if nothing more were to come? And this is hardly the first time we've heard about the possibility of a Booth-Brennan marriage since the season premiere.
Sweets ( John Francis Daley) was responsible for the other mention of marriage. The psychologist casually asked Booth about going to confession. In response, Booth pointed out that he couldn't confess -- and hadn't for a long time -- because he was living in sin with Brennan and didn't feel sorry about it.
These incidents, scattered throughout the season as they are, indicate that marriage is somewhere on the horizon. What form that marriage takes and when it will appear -- those are the remaining questions.
Still, it would make for an exciting season finale...
It's only natural that many "Bones" fans would want to see a marriage proposal at this point. And that proposal really ought to come -- if it comes at all -- soon. We waited six full seasons for Booth and Brennan to get together, but there's no way we could have that patience again.
But is the time right?
In order to have a legitimate, heartfelt proposal, both Brennan and Booth need to be in the same place at the same time. They're not good at that. It's totally possible that Brennan could find reasons to want to marry Booth, but will both partners share the same reasons?
For Booth, we all know that this should be emotional. Feelings are all that will matter to him. Brennan, on the other hand, always needs logical reasoning with her emotions. Booth could easily be turned off by too-cold a proposal. In that case, no proposal would definitely be better!
What could make her change?
Brennan may be opposed to marriage and religion, but she's not opposed to Booth. If Brennan were to find out about her man's existential suffering over their unmarried state, she might reconsider. Brennan would, of course, mock the whole proceeding.
We could also get the proposal if Brennan did somehow have a change of heart. This wouldn't be impossible this season -- the woman did have a ghostly visit/hallucination already.
Much less likely would be a case in which Booth threatens to leave if Brennan won't tie the knot. While Booth might have feelings in that direction, it's hard to imagine the man being so thoroughly emotionally manipulative.
Finally, there are reasons of legality. Common-law marriage takes quite awhile to establish, and it's hardly as legally binding. Were there to be a legal, rational reason to get married, it might be possible for Brennan to pop the question. Still, she would need some true emotions behind it if Booth were to be happy.
So is there a marriage proposal coming? Let us know what you thnk!
