Box Office: 'Avatar' gets a 'Dear John' letter
Early estimates put "Dear John" at $32.8 million for the weekend. "Avatar" "only" took in $23.6 million, keeping it on the path to break the $700 million mark before it leaves theaters, but still not enough to eight-peat at the box office.
"From Paris with Love," the John Travolta thriller, made a paltry $8.1 million and Mel Gibson's return to acting, "Edge of Darkness," brought in $7 million, giving it a total of $29 million so far. As the "SNL" "The View" parody pointed out Saturday night (Feb. 6), "Edge of Darkness" might possibly just be clips of other Mel Gibson movies strung together.
Now, before there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth about "Dear John" being the movie to topple "Avatar," we'd like to point out that "Avatar" has been ruling the box office since Dec. 20. Eventually something had to beat it and it just so happened to be "Dear John." If it wasn't this weekend, surely it would've been next weekend with "Valentine's Day," "The Wolfman" and "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" opening Feb. 12.
