Box office: 'Avatar' three-peats, passes $350 million
James Cameron's 3-D extravaganza earned $68.3 million over New Year's weekend, according to studio estimates, bringing its total take to $352.1 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide. It fell off only 10 percent from last weekend's $75.6 million domestic take.
With no new wide releases this weekend, the top seven movies all held their spots from last week. "Sherlock Holmes" earned $38.4 million to stay in second place, while "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" collected $36 million for third. "It's Complicated" ($18.7 million) and "The Blind Side" ($12.65 million) rounded out the top five.
With its weekend performance, "Avatar" also became the second-highest-grossing movie released in 2009, passing "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" still tops the list with $402.1 million.
