Box Office: 'Dear John' topples 'Avatar' on Friday. Will it win weekend?
James Cameron's nine-time Oscar nominated epic "Avatar" finished second to the Nicholas Sparks-penned love story "Dear John" on Friday night (Feb. 6), bringing in $6.2 million to "John's" $13.8 million.
These estimates put "Dear John" on track to be the first movie to win a weekend since "Avatar" hit theaters back in December.
It wouldn't be the first time a movie beat "Avatar" on an individual day, though. "Sherlock Holmes" opened on Christmas Day to $24.9 million, besting "Avatar's" Christmas Day haul of $23.5 million.
However, the Christmas holiday weekend still went to "Avatar." That weekend domination continued for the next five weeks in a row, bringing "Avatar's" grand total to seven weekends at the top of the box office.
Will "Dear John's" numbers hold through Sunday to finally topple "Avatar?" We think the numbers will hold, but if they don't... that's an eight-peat for "Avatar."
