Box office: 'Despicable Me's' big weekend dethrones 'Eclipse'

"Despicable Me," Universal's animated comedy about a would-be supervillain, continued its winning ways throughout the weekend of July 9-11 after a strong opening on Friday. It ended the weekend making a heroic $60.1 million, according to studio estimates -- well ahead of what forecasters were predicting going into the weekend.

The movie displaced last week's behemoth, "The Twlight Saga: Eclipse," which dropped down to second place with $33.35 million. That's a 49 percent dropoff from the $64.8 million it made from Friday to Sunday last week, which is not bad when you consider that the last "Twilight" movie, "New Moon," fell 70 percent in its second weekend.

"Predators," the weekend's other new wide release, came in third with a fairly healthy $25.3 million. "Toy Story 3" finished fourth with an estimated $22 million take -- pushing its total to $340 million so far -- and "The Last Airbender" was fifth with $17.15 million.

The weekend's top 10:

1. "Despicable Me" ($60.1 million)
2. "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" ($33.35 million)
3. "Predators" ($25.3 million)
