Box office: 'Elysium' destroys the weekend, 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' put up an admirable fight

Matt Damon's "Elysium" had a great opening weekend, easily destroying the box office and earning the top spot. Director Neill Blomkamp's action-packed sci-fi thriller earned a total of $30.5 million estimated for its opening weekend.

Coming in (not a close) second was Jennifer Aniston's and Jason Sudeikus' "We're the Millers," which earned $26.6 million estimated total for its opening weekend. As for the fantasy sequel "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," it put up an admirable fight and came in fourth with an estimated $14.6 million, behind Disney's "Planes," which earned an estimated $22.5 million for the weekend.
