Box office: 'Grown Ups 2' beats 'Pacific Rim,' 'Despicable Me 2' stays strong
Everything else, however, didn't do so great.
Despite negative reviews, the comedy sequel of "Grown Ups" brought in an estimated $16.3 million in Friday ticket sales. Estimates for the full weekend, put the Adam Sandler/ Chris Rock/ Kevin James/ David Spade comedy either in first place or in a tie for first place (with "Despicable Me 2") for the full weekend.
The second place entry for Friday was the weekend's other big release, "Pacific Rim." With $14.6 million in Friday ticket sales, the action movie from Guillermo del Toro handily beat "Despicable Me 2" (adding $13.4 million to its nearly $200 million in week 1 sales). However, box office projections drop "Pacific Rim" to third place with sales dropping off during the weekend.
Elsewhere in the movie world, the Sandra Bullock/ Melissa McCarthy comedy, "The Heat," pulled in another $4.2 million (for a total of $102 million to date), while "The Lone Ranger" kept on staggering to earn $3.4 million on Friday. The blockbuster wannabe has managed only $63 million throughout its release thus far.
"The Way, Way Back," a coming of age story in its second week of limited release, dominated the indie market with $304,000 in ticket sales. Released in only 7 theaters nationwide, the new drama, "Fruitvale Station," earned $127,000 with a whopping $18,000 per theater average.
