Box office: 'Limitless' beats expectations, wins soft weekend

brad-deniro.jpgBeating expectations, Bradley Cooper's new film "Limitless" won the box office this weekend (March 18-20), grossing $19 million. The pill-popping thriller was only expected to bring in $13 million-$15 million. The movie is Relativity's first number one debut since the studio began marketing and distributing its own films, The Wrap reports.

While that's great for the thriller and its studio, it still wasn't enough to help the overall box office; it was down 10 percent from last year when "Alice in Wonderland" was raking in the money.

Matthew McConaughey's new film "The Lincoln Lawyer" brought in $13.6 million, while the Simon Pegg- Nick Frost buddy comedy with an alien twist "Paul" grossed $13.2 million.

"Rango," the animated Western, only dropped 21 percent, earning $15.3 million, while last weekend's b.o. winner "Battle: Los Angeles" dropped 67 percent, making $14.3 million.

The weekend's top 10 movies:
