Box Office: 'Rio' soars above the 'Elephants,' 'Madea's Big Happy Family'

rio.jpg "Rio" held on to its box office crown for the second weekend in a row, as it earned an estimated $26.8 million during Easter weekend, bringing its domestic box office gross to just over $80 million.

"Madea's Big Happy Family" was close behind with a very decent $25.8 million, though it didn't earn nearly as much as "Madea Goes to Jail" ($40 M) or "Madea's Family Reunion" ($30 M).

The drama/romance "Water for Elephants" starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon came in at $17.5 million, which was about what it was predicted to earn. Coming in at fourth place was the Easter Bunny movie "Hop" with $12.5 million; its domestic total now tops $100 million.

"Scream 4" was in the fifth-place spot with $7.2 million. Its domestic total is now just over $30 million, which is still not as much as either "Scream 2" or "Scream 3" earned for their respective opening weekends and the fourth installment has been in theaters for 10 days.
