Box office: 'The Dark Knight Rises' opens to $161 million
On Saturday, estimates had the film on track for making $170 million so the numbers aren't a surprise. In May, "The Avengers" snagged $207 million in its opening weekend and at least one expert says the ticket sale losses caused by the Colorado tragedy are incalculable.
"I think it's safe to say it [would've made] $15 million-$20 million more if that had never happened," Exhibitor Relations box-office analyst Jeff Bock tells E!.
"The Dark Knight Rises" wasn't the only movie to take a hit. Numbers were lower than expected across the board. Warner Bros. and other studios held the release of their box office numbers throughout the weekend out of respect to the victims of the Colorado shooting.
"The family demographic possibly stayed away from The Dark Knight Rises, and they stayed away from films in general," Bock says, "and that's not a surprise given what happened."
