Box office: 'The Grey' is a howling success with $6.5 million on Friday

the-grey.jpg"The Grey," starring Liam Neeson took in $6.5 million at the domestic box office on Friday and may hit almost $20 by the end of the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. It may not be near last week's "Underworld: Awakening," which took in $25.3 last week, but considering that it lacks a hot chick in black leather, it's pretty impressive.

"The Grey" is Open Roads Films' second ever release, so nabbing the top spot is pretty impressive. The Katherine Heigl star vehicle "One for the Money" nabbed the second place spot with $4.1 million. Last week's winner "Underworld Awakening" took in $3.4 million on Friday, putting it in third place and the George Lucas-helmed "Red Tails" grossed $2.8 million and a fourth place spot. "Man on a Ledge" grabbed the fifth with $2.5 million.

Rounding out the top 10, we have "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," nominated for a best picture Oscar, grossing $2 million on Friday in sixth place. "Contraband" took seventh with $1.9. "The Descendants," which took in $1.7 million on Friday and eight place got a bump from all the Oscar buzz and it just  expanded to 2,001 locations this weekend -- 1,441 more than last week. "Beauty and the Beast" in 3-D took ninth with a little over $1.2 million and in tenth place was "Haywire" with just under $1.2.
