Box Office: 'Twilight' kills the competition with $73.5 million opening day

twilight-breaking-dawn-1-090911.jpgThere was no question as to what would be the box office topper on Friday (Nov. 18). The only real suspense was how much " The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" would make. And now we have the answer.

The vampire flick brought in $73.5 million and is on pace for a weekend haul of nearly $140 million. Deadline is reporting that this is the second-best opening day ever behind the final Harry Potter movie. That film delivered $91 million.

The animated penguin film " Happy Feet Two" opened to a seemingly lack luster $6 million. The sequel has a projected weekend take of $22.5 million. That said, industry experts foresee an uptick for the family film during the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend.

Rounding out the top five was last week's box office champ " Immortals," which took in $4 million, " Jack and Jill" at $3.7 million and " Puss In Boots" with $3 million.
