"World War Z," the zombie-pocalypse thriller starring Brad Pitt, and "Monsters University," the prequel to "Monsters Inc." featuring the voices of Billy Crystal and John Goodman, are both on pace to have solid opening weekends.

"Monsters" earned the top Friday spot with $30.8 million, while "Z" was right behind at $25.5 million, putting them on pace for $79 million and $65 million, respectively.

"Man of Steel," the top-earning movie last weekend, is looking at a $42 million weekend, which is down considerably from its opening three days that earned over $180 million, but still puts the superhero movie firmly in the "hit" category.
